Gents, 'tis that time of the year again. Yes, Autumn. Certainly a season to "fall" in love with. It’s a time for change. A time of arrival and a time of passing on. Where death gives birth to new life, literally and figuratively. Which means for all us fashion forward dudes, it’s the PERFECT season to showcase our unique and individualistic styles.
Yes, as we "leaf" summer behind, we say "Guten Tag" (That’s hello in German) to the cooler weather.
Though it might seem that each season has its own natural color and style scheme, and that society dictates that we follow certain norms (aka - Don’t wear white after labour day), we're here to break all those stereotypes and stigma's. Remember, when it comes to fashion, the only rule is -
THERE ARE NO RULES!
That said, there certainly ARE guiding principles that can be applied to help the trend savvy man select the appropriate wear for each occasion. We're here to distill all the mumbo jumbo and help you narrow down the 4 Fall Style Tips You Need To Know.
If you're still reading this…then sally forth young Lockwood onto tip number one!
1. COLOURS ARE YOUR ONLY FRIEND
Ok, maybe not your ONLY friend. At least we hope not. But they certainly should be one of them. We often associate Spring and Summer with bright, flashy colors. But don’t forget that Autumn is one of the most colorful seasons depending on where you live.

As long as you're anywhere in the northern hemisphere than you are quite familiar with the bold, and often striking gamut of hues that can exist along any tree lined road come fall time. So don’t let the lack of summer heat "cool" your clothing's colour palette.
Think, Bold but Flat solid colours. Flat doesn’t have to mean drab or dull though. By keeping your colour palette more neutral, such as dark, muted shades of Orange or Green, Burgundy or Navy Blue, it'll be much easier to match the layers of clothing that we inevitably end up wearing.
Take a look at just some of the colour schemes you could be wearing.
Don't forget to keep it simple, yet let your personal style show through. And don't be afraid to experiment with various colour. Remember, PRINCIPELS not RULES!
2. LAYER LIKE AN ONION

Hopefully your sense of style doesn’t make others cry as much as peeling onions, but you get the idea. Autumn is the season of layers. Long sleeves, Sweaters, Coats, Jackets, and so on and so forth. Tying in point number one, by keeping the color scheme rather neutral and flat, layering will be a much less daunting task. Remember to keep the lighter, breathable layers close to your body, with the bulkier, more weather proof materials reserved for the top coat.
And Yes, we know you might be tempted to trade warmth for fashion. We've ALL been there, trust me. But this is the 21st century! And thanks to innovations in technology such as the advent of two-way radio and email, we now have fall and winter styles that are both fashionable and functional.
Take a look at this 100% Cashmere overcoat from our friends over at Reinmuller Co. Just one example of how function and fashion are no longer relegated to realm of myths and legends. (Sorry Mr. Unicorn). Be sure to pick yours up here!
In our opinion it's always better to have too many layers than too few, making it easy to shed as needed. Experimenting with various layers can also give your look very unique and contrasting texture. For example, try a plain white button down coupled with an old-school patterned fleece pullover and a pair of khakis or chinos for a simple yet smart fall outfit suitable for almost any occasion.

Make sure to stock up on a good mix of lightweight short- and long-sleeved shirts, heavier fleeces and flannels, sweaters, and yes, we even approve of the ever classic hoodie. It's also a good idea to have a variety of outer layers for different casual and formal situations. Bombers, Leather Jackets, Parkas, Puffers, Quilted, Trench coats, and Raincoats to name a few. Since the weather in Autumn and Winter can be as unpredictable as next episode of your favourite daytime soap opera it's the course of wisdom to have your closet stocked for any situation.
3. MORE ACCESSORIES THAN A DRILL KIT

Let's be honest, guys love accessories just as much as women. Watches, cufflinks, hats, gloves, and more. Nothing says "me" like a well chosen complimentary accessory or two to your outfit. So if that’s your thing then Autumn is the season for you. Tying in the last point about layers, layering equals more options for mixing and matching, including accessories that are generally season locked. Hats, toques, leather gloves, and scarves, all contribute to both a functional and fashionable outfit.
When selecting or purchasing said items though, it’s a good idea to keep in the mind the first point on this list about colour choices. Generally speaking it’s safer to shop for more neutral, solid colours when buying accessories since these items are intended to compliment your outfit not overdo it.

4. WOOL IS THE NEW BLACK
Sheep, Goats, Rabbits, and Yak's, what do all these animals have in common? They are all sources of natural wool fibers. What's our obsession with wool all about? Wool is the perfect winterization material, not to mention one of our personal favorite materials to wear period. You might have seen fainting goats but have you ever seen a shivering sheep? There's a reason.

Wool provides the perfect combination of breathability and heat retention. While synthetic materials tend to trap moisture close to your body leaving you feeling sticky and uncomfortable, wool is able to magically 'wick' moisture away while retaining body heat. Its also an extremely durable material, which means that unlike those polyester wannabee's, your woolly drawers will stand the test of time.
Here Are Just Seven Benefits Of Wool Fiber
Wrinkle-resistant. Wool springs back quickly after stretching.
Resists soiling. Fiber forms a complex matting.
Retains its shape. Resilient fibers return to original size after washing.
Fire resistant. Fibers do not support combustion.
Wool is durable. Multi-part fibers resist wear and tear.
Repels moisture. Fiber sheds water.
Fabric is comfortable in all seasons. It keeps a layer of air next to the skin.
And best of all, wool is an eco-textile, which means that it is an environmentally friendly, natural, recyclable material. So be sure to add your old, discarded pure wool garments to your garden compost heaps, as they will break-down over time into a useful weed-supressing mulch.
When someone says 'wool' you might immediately be flooded with memories of the classic "wool socks" that every grandmother feels obligated to buy for her grandkids whether they like it or not.

But wool has so many other uses that we may not readily think about. Wool can be spun into yarn. Knitting converts yarn into sweaters, beanies, scarves, and gloves. Weaving changes the wool into fine fabric used in suits, coats, pants, and skirts. Coarser wools are used to make carpets and rugs. Wool fibers can also be used in the production of blankets and duvets. As you can see, the uses for this most exceptional of materials is almost limitless.
So what are you waiting for? Support the environment and look good doing it by investing in real wool clothing. Whether its wool pants or suits, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, jackets, and more. Make sure to always read the labels when purchasing clothing items to make sure that what you're getting is 100%, or at least as close as possible to, real wool.
